In the first half of the twentieth century, the Shaw neighborhood in Northwest DC was the epicenter of the African American community, host to jazz legends like Duke Ellington, and the site of elegant clubs, theatres, and shops. When segregation ended, the neighborhood began a downward spiral exacerbated by the 1968 riots and the decline of city services. Today, Shaw is coming back … and ONE DC wants to ensure that its lower-income, long-standing residents retain a voice in the community's development. It organizes DC residents--now in Shaw, Barry Farms, and Lincoln Heights--about their rights to safe, decent, affordable housing, income equity, and public land development. It also wants to be a leader in achieving social and economic justice, so its Leadership Education for Action and Power (LEAP) Academy, a six-session series of all-day worshops for ONE DC members, first analyzes the root causes of problems that affect communities, then develops strategies for addressing them at the structural level, and finally helps members learn the organizing and leadership skills that will effect change in their communities. The goal is nothing less than building a broad movement for racial and economic equity. New partners are welcome!
