Computer CORE

Most jobs today require some level of computer proficiency, but if you don't grow up with your hands on a keyboard, how are you supposed to learn? At Computer CORE, low-income adults get the technical and life skills they didn't learn as kids. What makes the program so successful? For starters, there's a six-month computer training course taught by instructors who work in the technology field. The course conquers fears, helps students develop logical thinking skills, and takes care of computer basics: navigating the internet and working with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. But Computer CORE goes beyond the technical: instructors advise students individually--identifying their existing skills, nurturing their interests, and supporting their career goals. After completing the first half of the term, students receive a free computer so that they continue to learn (and pass on the skills!) at home. In just five years, the CORE has grown rapidly--from a handful of students in its first year to 78 graduates in its most recent one. CORE credits its amazing results to inspired participants, dedicated instructors and volunteers (over 70), and partnerships with local community organizations. Catalogue donors: help your neighbors join the computer age and find a job that means dignity and security for everyone.
