It is art that makes life, makes interest, makes importance... and I know of no substitute whatever for the force and beauty of its process.
henry james
novelist

Culture fulfills us in ways that are uniquely human: theatre, music, dance, writing – these remind us of what we value, broaden our appreciation of diverse traditions, and serve as cornerstones of education, social reflection, imagination, and inspiration. It is worth noting, too, that every culture organization in the Catalogue is a committed community citizen – offering free performances, workshops, family events, summer opportunities, and in-school and after-school programs. Many people will experience the arts only through these outreach efforts, and for some the experience will be transforming. Arts organizations are also powerful little engines of community revitalization: they bring new people to old neighborhoods, cause small businesses to rise up and meet the needs of visitors, and generate jobs, activity, and new life. The schools and educational enrichment organizations we present are critical forces of cultural and economic health as well, and in Greater Washington they tackle the daunting job of educating students with multiple challenges – those who have learning disabilities, speak English as a second language, live in poverty, or are at risk for school failure. And they do it exceptionally well. Education is the key to a full sense of our human possibility, and to the universe of opportunity that we all want for our children and ourselves. It is also essential to our individual, and national, prosperity. So please consider supporting arts and education this year. You will be rewarded many times over.
