Gay Men's Chorus of Washington DC
In 1981, after the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus’ historic tour and performance at the Kennedy Center, a handful of determined citizens decided that Washington should have a chorus of its own. Today, GMCW is a highly respected arts and community service organization, described by the Washington Post as "one of the world’s best male choruses" (March 2001). Using music and theatre to entertain, affirm, and educate, its performances are not only of the highest artistic caliber, but also illuminate the lives of gay people in ways that break down barriers, shatter stereotypes, and change hearts. Its annual program includes three major concerts, a cabaret, a small-scale musical, and two small-ensemble concerts. The Chorus is equally committed to community outreach and educational activities--taking its musical message of tolerance and acceptance to the annual AIDS Walk and other fundraising and community events. In December 2002, GMCW was privileged to perform at the Kennedy Center Honors; it has also received the Mayor's Arts Award and three Washington Area Music Association "WAMMIE" Awards. GMCW will continue "to sing and to serve" until all people, regardless of sexual orientation, have full and equal rights. If that sounds like your kind of beautiful music, then lend this group your warmest support.
