Joseph's House
From streets, shelters, prisons, and hospitals, Joseph's House welcomes approximately thirty men a year to its eleven-bed home. Most are African-American, have Stage III AIDS, and frequently suffer from other health problems as well. Joseph's House offers each one a continuum of care: physical, emotional, and spiritual nourishment, 24-hour nursing, addiction recovery support, personal care services--and transitional support for those who regain their health. Some will do just that: kicking drugs and adhering to a medication regimen, they will leave on their own terms, accomplishing something unexpected. Most will not: they will live their last days at Joseph’s House, surrounded by individuals who have come to love them. Staff and volunteers will accompany them by vigil around the clock, remaining fully present to them in their final hours. At a time when most government funds go to HIV prevention and education, and few to programs for the thousands of infected individuals who desperately need other kinds of help, Joseph's House offers a critical service. The only hospice in the District devoted solely to the care of formerly homeless men living with AIDS, Joseph's House is steadfastly committed to providing a lifelong home and community to the men who walk through its doors. Consider the alternative.
