Theater Alliance

Washington's H Street NE corridor has never fully recovered from its destruction during the civil rights riots of 1968. But recent events--like the renovation and opening of the H Street Playhouse where Theater Alliance is the resident company-- have brought hope, promise, and renewed activity. Presenting visually and physically daring work to diverse and alternative audiences (some 3 to 5 plays a year; work that cannot be seen in other Washington theatres) is at the heart of it all. But the long-term goal is to be part of H Street's revitalization. The innovative Free Theater on H Street Program has distributed in two years nearly 800 tickets to persons living in a 100-block area, encouraging members of low income households, small business owners, government employees, and Gallaudet University students (who benefit from the signed performances) to visit the theatre at no cost and do business in this newly reviving neighborhood. In less than three years the Theater Alliance has been nominated for fifteen Helen Hayes Awards, won the Mary Goldwater Award for excellence, and helped H Street win the mayor's Cultural Arts District designation. The arts can be an engine for both economic and spiritual renewal: won't you be part of the renaissance?
