Washington Parks & People

Now here's a surprising fact: Washington, DC is the greenest city in North America, with the continent's highest percentage of public, urban green space. But vast sections of the land are disconnected, their stakeholders disinvested, their resources ill used, especially in DC's poorest and most underserved communities. Washington Parks & People works to reconnect public green spaces and their communities--our forgotten assets. By turning open-air drug markets into outdoor farm markets; places of youth violence into vibrant playgrounds where residents enjoy music, dance, theater, after-school programs, and even job training; and abandoned lots into revitalized community meeting places, WP&P addresses urgent needs with powerful, sustainable solutions in all eight wards of the city. Begun in 1990 in response to a child's killing near Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park, this extraordinary public/private partnership transformed the most crime-infested national park in the capital into one of its safest. It mobilizes tens of thousands of volunteers for community park revitalizations, removing millions of pounds of debris and planting thousands of trees. Winner of many awards, including the National Park System's highest honor, the National Partnership Leadership Award, Parks and People has just begun to reach all of the communities that need help; your generous philanthropic support broadens and deepens its impact all across the city.
