Food for Others

WISH LIST
$100: 2 whole weeks of food deliveries from Capital Area Food Bank;
$500: emergency milk and eggs for 140 households;
$1,000: 90 turkeys for Thanksgiving holiday assistance.

Food for Others is Northern Virginia’s primary safety net for those needing food assistance when an emergency strikes, and for the growing number of working poor who are unable to make ends meet. The largest provider of emergency food services in Northern Virginia, it is a “food rescue” organization, collecting food from donor organizations to meet the demand. Food for Others meets emergency needs for some 1,000 clients monthly; about 250 families take advantage of the weeknight supplementary food distributions at 14 sites in low-income neighborhoods (over 27,000 distributions last year); and bulk food is provided to about 50 community-based organizations. “Gleaning”programs harvest fresh produce at the USDA Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, giving volunteer families, community groups, and schools an opportunity to learn about hunger and help those in need. Local merchants, the Capital Area Food Bank, food drives, and gleaning provide the food; more than 600 committed volunteers provide the hands; and charitable contributions provide the funding. There are so many ways to help here!
