Each year, 4 million American women are victims of domestic violence and 1 in 3 adult women experiences at least 1 physical assault by a partner. These women have no hope, little confidence, no job, and – when they separate from abusive partners – no financial security. At Second Chance Employment Services, the idea is to turn this picture around. Providing interview coaching, pre- and post-placement services, and bilingual and translation assistance (as needed), SCES places financially at-risk women in meaningful employment that can really change their lives. Workshops teach interview skills and assist applicants in resumé writing and filling out government and private sector forms. Applicants receive instruction in job searching, selecting appropriate workplace clothing, and engaging in successful business communications. Pro bono legal services, dentistry, salon makeovers, and even plastic surgery are offered through SCES’s partners, who also serve as sources for job placement. SCES helps women rebuild their confidence and gives them the support they need to believe in a future free of abuse. Doesn’t everyone deserve a second chance?
