In 1870, The Washington Humane Society was primarily charged with the care
of work horses, who were routinely neglected and overworked. Chartered by
the US Congress, its mandate was to enforce anti-cruelty legislation in the
District, and until the 1930’s, when an office of child welfare was created, this
included protecting children as well as animals. The legacy of caring endures in
WHS’s dedication to animal welfare in every form. The only Open Access shelter in DC, they’ll never turn any
animal away, for any reason; and Humane Officers are on the road 24/7 protecting animals from abuse. Programs
have expanded to include adoption; emergency medical care for abused animals; humane law enforcement; low-cost
spay/neuter services; humane education (teaching respect for all living beings in public schools and communities);
shelters (providing a temporary safe haven for homeless, abandoned and abused animals); and wildlife rehabilitation
You can join with WHS to see that every living creature is given the best and fullest chance at life.
