The gap between the world’s technological haves and have-nots – commonly
known as the digital divide – continues to widen. Those on the far side find
themselves unable to compete in today’s global economy, and that only furthers
their marginalization and poverty. World Computer Exchange has taken on the
challenge: it keeps working computers out of landfills and gives them new life
in developing countries. WCE DC has shipped 4,346 computer sets to Bolivia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala,
Nigeria, and Zambia. The team is now gathering 400 computers to connect 26 local schools in 26 villages in El
Salvador. Twenty of these computers will go to San Miguel Library, supported by the Sister-City program in
Arlington, Virginia. One third of the funding typically comes from national or international organizations,
another third will be secured by local Peace Corps volunteers, and the final third ($10,000) must come from
donors here. Your contribution delivers 400 computers to the port of Acajutla and to children who otherwise
would linger on the far side of the divide.
