WISH LIST
$100: purchases a Polaroid camera to record evidence of physical abuse;
$200: assists 18 victims filing court documents to obtain protective orders;

Clients begin to line up outside the Workers’ Rights clinic at 5:30 in the morning, hoping to be among the fourteen who will receive legal assistance that day. By 9:00, 20-25 are waiting, and the line continues to grow. Unpaid workers – day laborers, housekeepers, grocery store clerks – seek help from Community Legal Services, and nearly half will recover their earnings. At the Family Law Clinic a mother whose child has been sexually abused seeks a protective order against her husband; a son files for guardianship of his infirm mother. CLS also works with students in the juvenile court system who have been suspended from school because of unmet special education needs. Free legal advice, information, translation of court documents, and referral for full representation in court are all part of the program. 99% of walk-in clients are eligible for free services, though some simply cannot be helped because there aren’t enough resources. Over 7,000 people were assisted last year ... and thousands more were turned away. You can make sure that doesn’t happen.
