In its first year, Empowered Women International operated from founder Marga
Fripp’s home basement, reaching out to immigrant communities through
empowerment workshops for women. Soon the mission became clear – to
revitalize women’s artistic talents, translating successful experiences in their native
countries into successful ones at home. Although highly talented, most emerging
artists have limited understanding of the importance of setting attainable goals,
creating budgets and marketing plans, and measuring their results. So EWI acts as a small business center for artist
entrepreneurs, providing the intensive training, business services, and mentoring that helps them acquire the life and
business skills necessary to be self-sustaining artists. They also develop the self-confidence they need to take their lives
into their own hands. Immigrant artists who have been assisted by EWI have increased their income, begun new
careers, and gone on to exhibit and sell art in galleries, shops, and arts centers including the Smithsonian Museum,
National Geographic, the World Bank, and various embassies in the District. Isn’t empowerment a wonderful thing?
