A recent immigrant starts a homework club in her apartment complex and increases the achievement level of children from war-torn Liberia. A Latino parent is appointed to the Montgomery County Board of Education and later becomes its president. A young white man founds a new community-based nonprofit to provide athletic and leadership opportunities for disengaged youth. An African American leads his tenant association in a struggle to preserve affordable housing for his diverse community. These are some of the accomplishments of IMPACT Silver Spring, which trains and educates people to work collaboratively across lines of race, class, and culture to initiate community change. Cutting edge programs led by a team of talented facilitators and educators – community empowerment workshops for renters, intensive training for immigrant and minority parents of schoolchildren, youth leadership programs for young people who feel disconnected from community and school – stimulate cross-cultural dialogue, encourage civic engagement, and explore the potential for genuine change. In Silver Spring, community and collaboration are the watchwords and IMPACT is more than just a name. Get engaged!
