Winston Churchill’s statement that “There is something about the outside of a
horse that is good for the inside of a man,” guides STEEED’s program as it
exposes city children to horses, the great outdoors, and the rewards of hard
farm work. Young children learn about horses, farm animals, crops, and weather.
Field trips, a Saturday program, and summer camp, bring kids to the STEEED
farm in rural Maryland to ride, garden, swim, and take nature walks. Cleaning stalls, mending fences, and
harvesting crops become part of the rhythm and satisfaction of time spent on the land. A work-study program
for inner-city high school students gives them the opportunity to ride, compete, and interact with horses. They
also work as tutors and camp counselors for younger participants, and assist with barn management, landscaping,
and ecological science lessons. STEEED participants show excellent school attendance, improved grades, and
greater interest in higher education. Young people, animals, and the natural world: you can make it happen for
the inside of a child near you.
