Chevy Chase Trust Sponsors the 2007-08 Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington
Washington, DC; January 1, 2008 — Chevy Chase Trust and the Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington announce a new partnership to support philanthropy in the Washington Region. Last year, Chevy Chase Trust made a significant contribution to the philanthropic discussion in the Washington area, commissioning a Boston College study that found that over $720 billion from Washington area individuals will be contributed to nonprofits over the next 50 years. According to the IRS, individuals in our region will donate more than $5 billion this year alone. The big question facing individuals during the busy Giving Season is, “Which worthy organizations are working at the community level, right in my backyard?”
According to Stacy Murchison, Vice President at Chevy Chase Trust, “We are investing in the Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington to help spread the word about some of the smaller charities that are effective, efficient, and financially transparent, but have limited budgets to gain exposure.” Barbara Harman, Executive Director of the Harman Family Foundation, the Catalogue’s lead sponsor, adds, “We welcome Chevy Chase Trust’s support in raising the visibility of the Catalogue project and in helping us reach out to more than 225,000 households throughout the region. We also appreciate the time the firm has given to review the nonprofit organizations that applied.” Creating partnerships and reaching new audiences are the Catalogue’s goals for 2007-2008, and Chevy Chase Trust is one of the first companies to invest in the Catalogue project.
The Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington enters its Fifth Anniversary Year as the most wide-ranging and sustainable philanthropy promotion initiative in metropolitan Washington. The Catalogue has helped raise more than $4.1 million from new donors for featured charities. The Catalogue’s collaborative and disciplined approach to connecting people with trustworthy nonprofit organizations is making a difference in the lives of the thousands of people served by the organizations featured in the Catalogue and online at
http://www.cfp-dc.org. In four years, the Catalogue has connected more than 1,000 individuals, family foundations and giving circles to organizations and causes where their contributions have a significant impact.
Harman continues, “It’s all about the power of one—one donor to make a difference in the life of a charity, one charity to make a difference in the life of a family, one family to contribute to the well-being of a community. One person’s generosity can be the spark that sets it in motion.”
